We do not teach students how to add fractions we teach them why we add fractions. Which in theory sounds great, but the application of how to add fractions is never taught. So when a student is giving a problem asking them to add fractions they can tell you what the operation is but they cannot apply the operation. There is a disconnect between the why and the application. This came about due to educators belief that students would preform better in math if they understood the why behind it. But the problem with that is the application of operations are lost and not practiced enough or even fully used. It’s completely how it is taught and then assessed. The two do not corelate.
